CHICAGO REVIEW PRESS ANNOUNCES RELEASE OF REDEFINING GIRLY: HOW PARENTS CAN FIGHT THE STEREOTYPING AND SEXUALIZING OF GIRLHOOD, FROM BIRTH TO TWEEN

New book by mom and entrepreneur Melissa Atkins Wardy gives parents the tools they need to reclaim “girlhood”

CHICAGO, ILL. – Activist Melissa Atkins Wardy‘s new book,  Redefining Girly: How Parents Can Fight the Stereotyping and Sexualizing of Girlhood, from Birth to Tween (Chicago Review Press: Jan. 2014) is a thoughtful, comprehensive guide for parents to raise happy, healthy, confident children in an environment saturated with stereotyped gender roles and sexed-up clothing, toys and media. A starred review in Publishers Weekly called Redefining Girly “an eye-opening tome” and “an absolute must-read.”

Written in Wardy’s neighborly, no-nonsense style, each chapter of Redefining Girly provides practical, specific parenting action plans from her own life as mother of two, templates and sample conversations for parents, and letters from leading experts in education, psychology, child development and girls’ advocacy.

“We know what are the problems facing girls,” Wardy said. “I wrote Redefining Girly to help give parents the tools they need to do something about it, sharing with them what I’ve learned over the years.”

Redefining Girly will be available for purchase in paperback for $16.95, starting January 1, 2014. The book is available for pre-order on Amazon.

“Wardy’s book reads like a conversation with a smart, wise, funny friend; one who dispenses fabulous advice on raising a strong, healthy, full-of-awesome girl,” said Peggy Orenstein, author of Cinderella Ate My Daughter.
